Welcoming skaters ages 3–8

At SHIELD, skating is more than just a skill—it’s a path to confidence. Our Learn to Skate program introduces kids to the ice in a safe, engaging, and progression-based environment. Whether it’s your child’s first time on skates or they’re ready for more advanced movement, we’ve got a place for them.

Program Structure

TWO SKILL LEVELS  8-WEEK PROGRAMS

Session Dates

  • Fall: September 6 – October 25

  • Winter: November 1 – December 20

  • Spring: January 3 – February 28
    (No class on January 17)

Phases & Pricing

1. Beginner Foundation Phase

For skaters who have never been on the ice or attended any on-ice programs. Participants may need assistance standing and moving on the ice.

Duration: 30 minutes
Time Slots:

  • 8:00 AM – 8:30 AM

  • 8:35 AM – 9:05 AM

Price: $200 + HST total
($25 + HST per session)

Goals:

  • Introduce skating through fun and games

  • Build confidence and comfort on the ice

  • Encourage movement through positive play

2. INTERMEDIATE PHASE

For skaters who have completed a Learn to Skate beginner program. Participants should be able to stand and skate independently, perform basic crossovers, and begin skating backward without assistance.

Prerequisite: Completion of Beginner Foundation Phase
Duration: 50 minutes

Time Slot:

  • 9:10 AM – 10:00 AM

Price: $280 + HST total
($35 + HST per session)

Skills Covered:

  • Forward skating (edges and speed)

  • Turns, pivots, and cuts

  • Lateral stride development

  • Stops, starts, and backward skating

What to Bring

Required Equipment:

  • CSA-approved hockey helmet (no bike/ski helmets permitted)

  • Skates with laces (hockey or figure)
    (Plastic buckle skates not recommended)

Recommended:

  • Mittens or gloves

  • Snow pants or waterproof pants

Registration Details

  • Capacity: Max 30 skaters per time slot

  • Sibling Discount: 10% off second child
